What’s cooking in Mali Losinj?

The island of Losinj will be hosting a new Croatian language course with a twist - the course will also be teaching Croatian cuisine. This is quite possibly the first of its kind for Croatia.

It will be run by the renowned London based Croatian Language School - sponsors of Croats in London. Language courses are nothing new - but one combined with teaching cuisine certainly is. A top Zagreb chef, Mladen Marusic, will be teaching the cuisine part of it. We asked the head of the CLS, Linda Rabuzin, how the course came about.

She said, “A lot of my students have Croatian partners, and they would sometimes like to surprise them by cooking something Croatian - and impress their partner‘s family. Unfortunately, they have no knowledge of the subject, so we intend to fill the gap. Of course, it’s not just for people to cook for their loved ones, some of my students who do business in Croatia think it’s a good move to invest in such skills. How better to impress a business contact than to be able to cook him or her a Croatian meal!”

The island of Losinj is one of Croatia’s western islands. It’s clear why it has been chosen for the course, it is very beautiful indeed. The course will be held in Cunski , near to the main town of Mali Losinj - is the tourist centre of the island. The town boasts facilities such as diving and yachting schools, surfing and even a bowling centre.

“It’s certainly not all work and no play,” says LindaRabuzin, “after lessons students will have plenty of time to relax. And when they go home - they should be able to cook a Croatian meal and be able to say what they are serving up in Croatian!”

Ballet Troupe Croatia returns to London

The renowned Ballet Troupe Croatia returns to London this month. Led by their principal dancer, Svebor Secak, they will be giving a performance of his new ballet, Caligula, to the music of Aram Khachaturian. The performance will take place at Sadlers Wells, (Lilian Baylis Theatre) on 23 June.

Ballet Troupe Croatia is a professional touring company that features principals and soloists from the Croatian National Theatre. They have performed in London previously, including the Royal Opera House in 2001 and 2002 and at the Millennium Done in 2000. More recently, they performed Tchaikovsky’s Hamlet at the Lilian Baylis Theatre in London in June 2005.

Caligula premiered at the Croatian National Theatre in Varaždin on 28 December 2006. Svebor Secak takes the title role of the Roman emperor Caligula. CIL has no doubt this will not be a performance to be missed!
