Back Translation

This is a process where an already translated document is translated back into the original language - usually by an independent translator. Then, the back translation and the original document are compared and edited accordingly. The two documents may not necessarily match, but the aim of the process is to ensure the authenticity and soundness of the translation. This process is often undertaken when translating marketing literature or advertising, where the concept and nuance behind the communication needs to be understood cross culturally. Occasionally, back translations are carried out for very literal documents for an enhanced quality control process.
