Students Share Their Language Learning Journeys – The Beginner’s View

Leonie attended a one week Croatian Language & Culture Immersion Course on the island of Lošinj in April 2024. Leonie is from Tasmania and wanted to get a feel for the Croatian language before exploring Croatia for the first time. Here’s what she told us:

What a wonderful course for a beginner in the Croatian language.  If you want to escape from the noise and routine of urban life, to a quiet, beautiful place in which to soak up the authentic, peaceful and friendly atmosphere, while attempting to learn a new language, there is no better place than Ćunski, on Lošinj island.

This small, sleepy village, situated on a hillside with magnificent views to the sea, and where most residents do not speak English, could not be bettered. I stayed with lovely hosts (who didn’t speak English), near the top of the hill and wandered down the quaint, narrow streets each day to the school.

Linda is a wonderful teacher, who is very patient, gracious and kind, especially with a slow beginner as I am (not having studied anything in years, it takes time to get my brain into gear). Each day we would progress together through the lessons and then in the afternoons explore the island, it’s history and traditions, before returning for another lesson. I particularly enjoyed the laughter and conversations as I struggled with certain pronunciations.

I had hoped to achieve some insight into Croatia and its people, along with some basic familiarity with the language and this was certainly the case. I hope to continue with learning when I return home and to take some further lessons. Hopefully I will get to take some of these in Lošinj again.

Hvala Linda,  do sljedeće lekcije.

We were so impressed with Leonie’s work and travel ethic and thoroughly enjoyed teaching her. When a student is starting from scratch it offers different challenges and opportunities, of course. But there are many ways you can help students, with no prior knowledge of the language, acclimatise quickly and get more out of Croatia and the Croatian language.
